this sense “spirits” refers to the results of the Spirit in his inspiring of the prophets. These “inspirations,” given by the Spirit and welling up within the prophets, are to be subjected to (ὑποτάσσω) or controlled by the discipline of which Paul speaks. Paul expects the prophets themselves to have this degree of self-control over what they do. Of course, it is quite possible that the elitist Christians in Corinth felt that a certain lack of self-control indicated their spiritual prowess. Paul
